Dandruff or Seborrhea is one of the most common scalp disease that majority of the population suffer from. It is a common scalp disorder known as seborrheic dermatitis. It can occur due to dry skin, irritated oily skin, growth of bacteria and fungus on the scalp, inflammatory skin conditions and other such factors. It causes itchiness along with excessive formation of dry skin flakes on the scalp. In most cases, the problem of dandruff itself is not very serious but it is embarrassing and irritating indeed and lowered self-esteem.

There are many products available in the market that can help you get rid of dandruff. But, most are not really effective in keeping the scalp dandruff-free on a long term basis. Even though market products help to get rid of dandruff it can cause other side effects like brittle hairs, hair loss, and dry scalp and so on.

Here are some home remedies to remove dandruff by home remedies without any side effects.

1. Lemon juice


The acidity in pure freshly squeezed lemon juice contains acids that can help break down the fungus that is often the cause of dandruff outbreaks. It also helps relieve itching on the scalp. It’s also free from harsh chemicals and other unnatural ingredients that often do more harm than good to our hair and scalp-plus it leaves you smelling clean and fresh.

  • Gently rub the lemon slices on the scalp for about 2 minutes. Leave for 15 minutes and after that shampoo your hair.
  • Mix the juice of half a lemon in one-quarter cup of plain yogurt. Apply it on your hair and scalp. Leave it on for about 20 minutes before rinsing it off and shampooing your hair.
  •  Massage your scalp with a few teaspoons of lemon juice mixed with a little water. Leave it on for 5 minutes before rinsing it out and shampooing your hair.

2. Aloe vera

The cooling effects of aloe vera will soothe the itch. Also mildly exfoliates the skin and has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. It has proteolytic enzyme characteristics, which means it can break down proteins, including dead skin cells. This quality of aloe vera helps it to act as exfoliator and removes the dead skin so that it doesn’t appear later as dandruff.

  • Apply aloe vera gel on your scalp and leave it on for about 15 minutes, and then rinse using a mild shampoo.

3. Apple cider vinegar


Apple cider vinegar is one of the best remedy for dandruff treatments. The acidity of apple cider vinegar changes the pH of your scalp, making it harder for yeast to grow. It treats itchy, dry skin and also helps to kill dandruff-causing fungus and bacteria. But be careful and don’t overuse it as it too much of it will dries your scalp and hair and lead to hair breakage as well.

  • Add one-half cup of vinegar to two cups of water. Rinse your hair with this mixture after shampooing your hair.
  • Massage your scalp with a mixture of two parts white vinegar, one part olive oil and three parts water. After 10 minutes, rinse it off and shampoo your hair using a mild shampoo.

4. Tree tea oil

Tea tree oil has strong antifungal properties, making it a good treatment for dandruff. Tea tree oil has excellent anti-inflammatory properties and a higher rate of dermal penetration, which makes it one of the best remedies for dandruff. Tea tree oil has also been found to work as an antiseptic.

  • Add a few drops of tea tree oil to your regular shampoo when you wash your hair. Add one drop of this essential oil per ounce of shampoo.
  • Tea tree oil shampoo is also available in market. You can use that as well for  treating dandruff
  • You can also dilute the oil by adding a few drops of tea tree oil to a tablespoon of olive oil or coconut oil. Apply it on your hair, leave it on for at least 30 minutes or overnight and then wash your hair. Do this once or twice a week.

5. Fenugreek seeds

The herb fenugreek has antifungal and soothing properties that can help control dandruff to a great extent. Fenugreek seeds have a composition that is rich in protein and amino acids, encouraging healthy hair/hair growth and warding off those wicked flakes in the process. A little bonus-its high concentration of lecithin (a natural emollient) can help make hair stronger overall, and many people find that it leaves their hair silky smooth and soft. The presence of several vitamins and minerals makes fenugreek seeds one of the ideal home remedies for dandruff.

  • Crush the fenugreek seeds using a pestle and soak it in two cups of hot water for overnight. Strain the mixture, and use the water to rinse your hair in the morning.
  • Mix fenugreek paste or powder with yogurt and then apply in your hair scalp. Leave it for at least 1 hour or till it dries out. Wash off using shampoo.

6. Yogurt

The yeast within our body triggers inflammation and build-up yeast on the skin. Boosting friendly bacteria inside our digestive systems can reduce the yeast within our bodies. Yogurt is one of the best sources of friendly bacteria, and it prevents scaling of the scalp.  Yogurt being a good source of probiotics can help treat dandruff condition. The acidic quality of the curd not only helps combat dandruff, but conditions it to give it a shiny, soft texture.

  • Apply the yogurt (preferably sour) to your scalp and leave it as it is for about 1 hour. Rinse your hair, and wash with mild shampoo.

7. Neem leaves


Azadirachta indica or also known as neem, neemtree and Indian Lilac is traditional Asian remedy for dandruff. Neem extracts have excellent anti-fungal properties that can be used in the treatment of dandruff. It also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. But when you use it your scalp might itch but it is normal and don’t need to worry.

  • Boil neem leaves for about half an hour. Make a paste and apply to your scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then wash off with water.
  • Use neem powder and make a paste using lemon juice or yogurt. Apply it on your scalp and leave for 1-2 hours. Wash off with mild shampoo.

8. Fuller earth

Fuller earth is great for skin but it also works miracles for hair and scalp. Fuller’s earth absorbs the oil, grease, and dirt which cause dandruff. It also improves blood circulation to the scalp, earth soothes the scalp, fights irritation thereby keeping the scalp clean and free from dandruff.

  • Mix fuller earth with water and add lemon juice to it and make a paste. Apply it on hair and scalp and leave on for at least 30 minutes and wash off with water.

9. Baking soda

Baking soda, along with its exfoliation and anti-fungal properties, soothes the scalp and reduces redness and itching. It is alkaline in nature which balances pH level on the scalp and helps eliminate dead skin cells by acting as a mild defoliant. It also helps in controlling oil secretion on the scalp. Though your hair might get dried initially, within two weeks, your scalp will start producing natural oils to combat the dryness. The results may take time to appear, but this one is a sure remedy for flakes.

  • Take a spoonful of baking soda and rub it thoroughly in wet hair and scalp. Leave it on for a minute and then wash it off. Continue this four times a week for a few weeks.

10. Aspirin


Though not a natural remedy, it is definitely a quick way to get rid of dandruff. If you don’t have extra time for home remedy, it would definitely help you.. Pure Aspirin uses a large percentage of Salicylic Acid, which is an active ingredient in many commercial anti-dandruff shampoos. Salicylic Acid has fungicidal and anti-microbial properties to fight the extra flakes caused by fungus.

  • Crush 2 aspirin tablets and add it to any normal shampoo. Use this shampoo while washing your hair. Let it lather and keep it on for 5 minutes. Wash your hair. If you feel the aspirin powder on your scalp, rinse again with plain shampoo.

While using natural remedies you need to be patient. . You’ll need to follow the remedy of your choice consistently for best results.
